One Sky, Many Stories

It has great significance in Arab, Persian and Indian astronomy traditions and will be in the eastern sky on the 8th of August. Mars shines brightly red when it moves through Scorpius and hence, in proximity to Mars in the sky, it gets the name Antares meaning Rival to Mars. Colourful Bag Sewing Workshop

Event/Project Description: Colourful bags will be made from upcycled fabric to replace single use plastic bags. These can be reused many times in any way that a plastic bag is used. Persian calligraphy is one of the most famous traditional arts in Iran that is common in letters with Arabic, Urdu, some parts of India, Turkey, Tajikestan, and Afganistan…. but the style of writing is a bit different.

Iranian calligrapher performs their art works with two style of writing (Nastaliq and Cursive Nastaliq).

They are usually written in the form of short line of a famous poem or phrase. Calligraphy has an old historical background.

Calligraphy in the Middle East has always had architectural applications; as a sacred art to write holy words of Qur'an and other religious quotes and as a decoration to make architectural monuments such as mosques and shrines look more and more beautiful.

• To get community to look at one of the traditional style of writing in the world

• Compare different scripts of languages

• Community engagement to learn how to write the simple word or their name with traditional calligraphy tools: "Bamboo Pen", and "Traditional ink" over special paper.

• Promote social cohesion and creative new experience for the whole family

• Able to take home everything that has been written for them in a new language to put in a frame!

How do I get there?

Bus no. 6 or 10 to stop 13 George Town Road. Car parking is available on site and on the road.

University of Tasmania students may catch the free UTAS bus from Newnham Campus departing at 5.45pm. Please ensure you register for the bus through eventbrite. 

What food shall I bring?

Bring a savoury or sweet dish to share with other guests. Please bring food that does not require heating or assembling at the venue as there will not be cooking facilities available on event day. We will contact you before the event to answer any questions.

I have special dietary requirements. Can I attend?

Yes. All guests will introduce their dishes and the ingredients before dinner starts. If you are unsure of what a dish contains, please ask our facilitators at your dinner table and they will be happy to help you. You may bring something you wish to eat yourself. Some guests may also cater to people with special dietary requirements. We advise you to be aware of your own needs and not risk anything you are not sure of.

Will alcohol be served? Can I bring my own wine or beer?

All Welcome Dinner Project events are alcohol-free. We provide water, soft drinks and juice.

Can I attend if I can’t communicate fluently in English? 

Yes. We welcome people from all backgrounds and encourage cross-cultural connections. Our facilitators at your dinner table will be happy to assist you.

Can children attend the event?

Yes. We advise all children be supervised by their parents/guardians at all times. Children must be registered under the bookings of their parents/guardians.

Event Type: Interactive Talk/Workshop via SKYPE

Event Description: Being around grief and loss, as with almost any job that connects us to human pain and suffering, exposes us to 'secondary traumatic stress.' Left unchecked this exposure can lead to debilitating conditions such as vicarious trauma, burnout and compassion fatigue. This workshop will examine the strategies and tools such as reflection, mindfulness and peer support, which can be used to mitigate the emotional/existential impacts of this work, as well as to help us be able to mediate meaning and purpose through this work.

Joe Sehee has worked in the end-of-life field for nearly 20 years. Founder and former Executive Director of the Green Burial Council in the US, Joe has more recently been working as a non-religious pastoral carer and wellbeing consultant. Joe currently serves as volunteer chaplain with the Victorian Council of Churches Emergencies Ministry as well as with Caulfield Hospital. He is also a burnout survivor.

 Yarn Bomb an Octopus' Garden

Participants will be involved in creating an Octopus' Garden on the quadrangle fence at West Launceston Primary School. Students, parents and friends of WLPS have been busily knitting, croqueting and creating wool yarn artwork to create a marine underwater scene. We feel peace when we imagine a world where we hold respect for all living things. On Saturday Aug 4 everybody is welcome to put the pieces together as a dynamic community art project.

 Building a garden bed with Eco-bricks

Target audience : open

Participants will be involved with hands-on construction of garden bed at the WLPS garden. It will involve using eco-bricks which are 2l milk containers filled with soft plastics in an effort to reduce the risk of plastics entering the ocean and impacting on marine life. The garden bed is designed to complement the kitchen garden by creating a growing space for healthy vegetables and herbs.

Event Type: In all countries across the globe we share a common link of experiencing peace in community when people are nourished with health-giving food. This workshop demonstrates a simple technique to create a garden bed, with the added benefit of respecting marine life by reducing plastic pollution.

Event Description: Building an eco-brick garden bed is simple but like all jobs in the garden "many hands make light work". Participants will each have a task to perform and assist with building the garden bed. The physical construction of the garden bed will be stage one, with completion of the garden bed occurring over the following weeks in preparation for planting in spring.

Hon Brendan Nelson

Dr Brendan Nelson has been the Director of the Australian War Memorial for almost six years. Prior to this role, he was the Australian Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, the European Union and NATO. Apart from overseeing a major transformation in Australia’s relationships with the European Union and NATO, Dr Nelson forged deep links with the communities of Flanders, where almost 14,000 Australians lost their lives during the First World War. He regularly made the trip from Brussels to the Menin Gate Memorial to the ‘missing’ at Ieper, where the names of 6,190 Australians who died in the First World War and have no known grave are listed.

Born in Victoria, Dr Nelson graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Flinders University before working as a medical practitioner in Hobart from 1985 to 1995. During this period he served as National President of the Australian Medical Association where he campaigned on a wide range of social policy issues, including Aboriginal health and immunisation. He also led the campaign against tobacco advertising and sponsorship of sport and was a relentless advocate for private health insurance. 

Dr Nelson was elected to the Federal Parliament of Australia in 1996. Some 10 years later he was appointed Minister for Defence when troops were deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, East Timor and the Solomon Islands. 

The following year Dr Nelson was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Australia, serving as Leader of the Opposition until September 2008.

In 1995 Dr Nelson was awarded the AMA’s highest honour, the Gold Medal for “Distinguished Service to Medicine and Humanity”. In recognition of his commitment to public health, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. In 2011 he received an Honorary Doctorate from Flinders University and in 2017, an Honorary Doctorate from the Australian National University.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of NSW (2017), Rotary Paul Harris Fellow and a Sydney University John Lowenthal Medallist.

Dr Nelson was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in January 2016 for his services to the community, the parliament of Australia, diplomacy and cultural leadership.

In addition to being Director of the Australian War Memorial Dr Nelson is a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at ANU; Member of the Australian Genome Project Advisory Board; Patron of Lifeline ACT; Patron of Trish MS Research; Patron of the Weary Dunlop Foundation; Patron of the NSW RSL and Services Clubs; Ambassador for Legacy Australia; Ambassador for the Invictus Games for disabled veterans; ambassador for Soldier On and ambassador for the Defence Reserve Forces Council.

West Launceston Primary School students will cook pizzas in the school kitchen with special guest chef for the day using olives picked from the school garden and fresh garden produce.

Saturday Aug 4 from 9am - 2pm a market will be held selling international cuisine from Afghanistan, Bhutan, Egypt and more, local fresh produce and art and crafts made by members of the Launceston Community. There will also be a clothes repair cafe.

An Artwork Gallery highlighting the talents of Our Global Village Community will fill the walls of the Music Hall and artisan workshops will be held in the morning and afternoon on both Saturday and Sunday.

Event Type: Global Village Market celebrating our multi-cultural community and enjoying the richness this cultural diversity brings to our City.

Free skill sharing workshops will be held over the two days to provide opportunities for all in community to learn new skills and build cultural understanding by working together side by side to create beautiful works of art.

Event  Description: Three fun-filled days of creative learning and participants will have the opportunity to see, create and experience beautiful works of art.

For many people, to create a garden is an experience and expression of peace. These activities will also be held in the West Launceston Primary School Community Garden throughout the weekend.

Launceston Heat of the Australian Poetry Slam featuring Guest Poet Sara Mansour

Target audience: All ages welcome.

Event Type: The Launceston Heat of the Australian Poetry Slam 2018 will feature Guest Poet Sara Mansour, who is a lawyer, poet, women's rights advocate, founder and host of Sydney's Bankstown Poetry Slam and board member of NOW Australia - which aims to end sexual harassment, intimidation and abuse in the workplace.

Event Description: A Poetry Slam is where performance poetry meets competitive creativeness! It is loud, fast, fun and exciting! Up to 20 Tasmanian poets will be bringing their two-minute original work to the stage to impress the cheering, finger-clicking audience and the judges (who have been randomly selected from the audience) in the hope of winning a Place in the Tasmanian Final, and a chance to compete against Slammers from around Australia at the Sydney Opera House in October.
